How To Choose The Right Abrasive Sandpaper?
1. Understand the material properties: First, you need to clarify the material of the object being polished, such as metal, wood, plastic, etc. Each material has different requirements for dry abrasive sandpaper. For example, hard metal may need to be sanded starting with a lower grit sandpaper, while softwood may start with a higher grit.
2. Consider the finish you need to achieve: If you need to sand an object to a very smooth surface, such as during car paint repair, you usually need to use waterproof sandpaper with a higher grit, such as 4000-grit sandpaper or ultra-fine sandpaper. If you only need to remove surface roughness, you can choose sandpaper with a lower grit.
3. Determine the grinding stage: The grinding process is usually divided into three stages: coarse grinding, medium grinding, and fine grinding. In the rough grinding stage, velcro abrasive sandpaper with a lower mesh size (such as 40 mesh to 80 mesh) is generally used to remove larger flaws and burrs; in the intermediate grinding stage, a medium-mesh size (such as 120 mesh to 240 mesh) can be used to further smooth the surface; fine grinding or polishing In this stage, abrasive sandpaper with a high mesh number (such as 320 mesh to 600 mesh and above) should be used to achieve a smooth and delicate surface.
4. Observe the grinding marks: In actual operation, you can judge whether you need to replace the sandpaper with a finer grit by observing the grinding marks. When the original sandpaper traces almost disappear, it indicates that the grinding requirements at this stage have been reached, and you can use higher grit sandpaper to continue grinding.
5. Consider subsequent processes: If the polished surface needs to be painted or coated, the last step of polishing should use sandpaper fine enough to ensure that the surface is smooth and traceless so that the paint or coating can adhere evenly.
6. Consider the sanding cycle: If you need to sand a large area, you will usually choose sandpaper with a longer service life. Aluminum oxide sandpaper has a long life and is suitable for long-term sanding work. When you need to sand quickly or change sandpaper frequently, you can choose to use wollastonite sandpaper. Its sand grains are sharper, but its lifespan is shorter.
In general, the choice of sandpaper is not rigid but needs to be chosen flexibly based on the specific working scene, material characteristics, and expected sanding effect. The correct selection and use of sandpaper can not only improve work efficiency but also ensure the quality of polishing and show the best condition of the work.
