What Factors Affect The Service Life Of Water Sandpaper?

The production process of water sandpaper has strict requirements for abrasive paper base material, abrasive, binder, and sand planting density. Its service life is affected by many factors. Only by understanding these factors can we better prevent it. Below, we will introduce the factors that affect its service life.

Adhesion and clogging

When a layer of metal material covers the cutting edge of the abrasive grain, it is called adhesion and clogging. At this time, the surface of the water sandpaper becomes shiny, and it feels smooth when touched by hand. Adhesion and clogging mainly occur in materials with high strength, especially hard and tough ones.

The main reason for adhesion and clogging is insufficient grinding pressure. For materials with high hardness, insufficient pressure makes it difficult for abrasive grains to enter the workpiece and for abrasive particles to self-sharpen.

Even if sufficient high grinding pressure is added to relatively soft contact wheels or pressure plates, it only leads to severe collapse, and the abrasive grains are difficult to press into the workpiece. Higher speed makes the time for abrasive grains in the grinding area insufficient and the depth of cut into the workpiece thinner, which generates significant heat.

The causes of adhesion and clogging are comprehensive, and the solutions are also comprehensive, which means suitable contact wheels or pressure plates, sufficient grinding pressure, and lower speed are the fundamental solution to the problem. Choosing abrasive grains with good self-sharpening is also necessary.

Bluntness

During the grinding process, although all abrasive grains are still present, their sharpness is very poor. This is because the cutting edge of the abrasive grain becomes blunt due to wear, and this phenomenon is called bluntness.

What we mean by "bluntness" here is mainly caused by improper selection or the use of water sandpaper. Relatively soft contact wheels or pressure plates make it difficult for abrasive grains to cut into the workpiece, resulting in the flattening of the blade section.

Inadequate grinding pressure is also prone to make water sandpaper dull, and the abrasive is difficult to self-sharpen. When the workpiece is relatively hard, improper selection, or higher speed, it is also difficult to cut into the workpiece and causes bluntness.

Through the above introduction, we also understand the factors that affect the service life of water sandpaper. To extend the service life of the sandpaper, we need to pay special attention to the occurrence of "adhesion and clogging" and "wear" phenomena in order to avoid wear and tear of the sandpaper and reduce operating costs for enterprises.
